Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on August 21, 2026, that he has referred the installation of Islamic foot-washing stations at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston to the U.S. Department of Justice for investigation. Abbott claims these facilities are discriminatory, stating they provide special treatment based on religion and do not serve the general public. He has also directed a review of state grants to these airports, which may face revocation due to their plans for these washing facilities.
In his communication to U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, Abbott highlighted that the washing stations at IAH include religious items such as copies of the Quran and prayer rugs. He argues that government-owned airports should not favor one religion over others. Abbott's concerns were raised as DFW Airport was considering a proposal to add ablution washing stations, which was ultimately abandoned. However, he noted that two such stations are already operational at the airport.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire responded by stating that the washing station was established to meet the needs of Muslim travelers and is part of a facility that also includes interfaith chapels, emphasizing that it is open to all travelers regardless of faith.
