Jetstar, an Australian budget airline owned by Qantas, announced that passengers will be required to pay fees for overhead carry-on bags starting in February 2027. The fees will begin at $25 AUD (approximately $18) per bag per flight. Passengers will still be allowed to bring smaller bags, such as backpacks or handbags, that fit under the seat in front of them without an additional charge. This new policy replaces the previous allowance of carry-on luggage up to 7kg (about 15.4 pounds).
In a statement, Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully described the fees as a measure to streamline the boarding process and improve on-time departures, allowing customers to pay only for what they need. Aviation expert Steven Arroyo noted that the policy could expedite boarding but may impact larger families. Some travelers have expressed dissatisfaction with the new fees, with comments on social media describing them as excessive. Others have supported the change, arguing that it could help manage space in overhead bins.
Industry experts indicated that Jetstar's move aligns with trends in the airline industry, where other budget airlines have already implemented similar fees. The announcement has sparked a range of reactions from travelers, highlighting the ongoing debate over airline pricing practices.
