Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley spoke about the need to balance privacy and safety in an interview with Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany. He highlighted the public's pushback against neighborhood surveillance cameras, including incidents of vandalism and protests against the technology. Automated license plate readers, known as Flock cameras, are utilized by law enforcement in various states to collect vehicle data for criminal investigations, but there are growing concerns among residents regarding privacy and potential misuse by authorities.
Langley noted that some lawmakers, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Tim Burchett, have proposed measures to ban or limit the use of such technology. He emphasized the importance of finding a compromise between safety and privacy, stating, "When people talk about just one of these, privacy or safety, they're prioritizing the wrong thing."
He mentioned that Flock cameras have assisted in over a million investigations and helped locate more than 10,000 missing persons. Langley also called for better regulation and accountability in the use of surveillance technology, advocating for data retention limits and auditing practices to ensure responsible use. He expressed concern over the lack of regulation and accountability in the industry.
