Thomas stated, "We had this saying [that there are] only two things I have to do: stay Black and die," highlighting his rejection of societal expectations tied to race. He elaborated that he declined to conform to what others believe he should think due to his race, which has led to perceptions of him as a contradiction. Thomas, who grew up in segregated Georgia, shared his experiences and how they shaped his views, including a shift from left-wing Black nationalism to a more individualist perspective after a protest in the 1970s. He compared the pressure to conform to political ideologies to the restrictions of racial segregation, questioning why there is resistance to his embrace of certain ideas.
