N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas Wins Democratic Senate Nomination in Oklahoma

<p>N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, a nurse and political newcomer, won the runoff election for the Democratic Senate nomination in Oklahoma, defeating Jim Priest, a lawyer and nonprofit executive. Thomas received the highest percentage of votes in the June primary contest, which included five candidates.</p><p>Oklahoma has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in over 30 years, making her candidacy significant. Thomas has outlined various policy proposals on her campaign website, including increasing teacher pay, restoring Roe v. Wade, and expanding Obamacare. A notable aspect of her campaign is her commitment to impeaching President Donald Trump if elected.</p><p>In a recent interview with NPR affiliate KOSU, Thomas addressed her approach to working with the Republican nominee, Rep. Kevin Hern, who supports Trump. She stated, "Like I said, I'm kind, not nice. So I will make sure that I work as diligently as I can to make sure that within my first 100 days that we impeach, remove and convict." She emphasized her determination, saying, "They will have to pry that pen out of my cold, dead hands before I go any further with allowing this administration to continue doing what they're doing."</p><p>Thomas faces a challenging election against Hern, who won Oklahoma by nearly 35 points in 2024. While Thomas has shown strong performance in her nomination process, Hern has a significant campaign war chest, reportedly peaking at nearly $10 million, compared to Thomas's fundraising of just under $60,000.</p><p>Hern has received Trump's endorsement and supports the president's SAVE America Act. He commented on Thomas's candidacy, stating that Oklahomans value Trump's agenda and that Thomas's views are out of touch with the state's direction.</p>
