US Air Force Refuelling Planes Depart Bulgaria Amid Local Concerns

Two United States Air Force (USAF) refuelling aircraft departed from Bulgaria’s Bezmer airbase, bringing relief to local residents who had expressed concerns about potential Iranian attacks. Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed the departure, stating, "The USAF air tankers took off yesterday and left Bulgaria," while President Iliana Yotova remarked, "For now, this mission is over." The aircraft, Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers, were reportedly reassigned to support other operational requirements. Residents of Bezmer had been anxious about the presence of the aircraft, fearing it could make their village a target for Iranian retaliation. Iran had previously warned Bulgaria against allowing its territory to be used for US military operations. Reports indicated that Iranian forces had considered targeting US assets in southeastern Europe if tensions escalated. Local sentiments varied, with some residents expressing fear and disappointment towards the government for not addressing their concerns, while others dismissed the panic as unfounded. Mayor Rosen Rusev noted that many villagers work at the airbase and that military aircraft have long been part of their environment. Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that the aircraft had not conducted any flights south of the airport, but had been involved in training exercises with NATO allies.
