As summer 2026 concludes, extreme heat across Europe has resulted in significant consequences, including approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths in Germany, with nearly two-thirds occurring in a single week in June. A Dutch bank has estimated that the summer heat will cost the European Union €180 billion ($209 billion) in lost GDP, while European farmers lost around 9 million tons of grain crops in June.
Despite the evident impact of climate change, some political figures have downplayed its significance. Richard Tice, deputy leader of the UK's Reform Party, stated that climate change is a natural occurrence and encouraged the public to enjoy the heat. In the U.S., Harriet Hageman, a Republican politician, described the heatwave as typical summer weather, while Tino Chrupalla, co-leader of Germany’s AfD party, referred to it as a “completely normal summer.” However, these claims are contradicted by scientific evidence.
NASA has stated that human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels, have contributed to warming the Earth's surface and oceans, which in turn affects the climate. This summer has been marked as historically hot, with independent climate monitoring organizations such as NOAA, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, and the Japan Meteorological Agency reporting that last month was either the warmest or second warmest on record.
The extreme heat has led to operational halts at energy plants, damage to infrastructure, and increased heat stress for inhabitants of older buildings. According to NOAA, July was the warmest on record for North America, Africa, and Asia, surpassing previous records set during the Dust Bowl in 1936 and an extreme heatwave in 2012.
Additionally, the average sea surface temperature reached its highest level since records began in 1979, hitting 21.1 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit). In Spain, the Vox party claimed that wildfires, which burned over 254,000 hectares this season, were unrelated to climate change, yet experts assert that rising global temperatures significantly contributed to the severity of the wildfire season in Spain, France, and Canada.
Attribution science research indicates that climate change made the wildfires in Spain 20 times more likely and doubled the probability in France. This phenomenon, known as weather whiplash, describes how ecosystems can rapidly shift between wet and dry conditions, exacerbating drought and increasing wildfire risks. Francesca Di Giuseppe from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts noted that the probability of fire weather has been altered by climate change.
The summer's extreme heat has also led to drying bodies of water across Europe, with rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, and Po reaching historically low levels, impacting shipping and drinking water filtration. In the U.S., drought conditions have severely affected crops and livestock, with 59% of sorghum being grown in drought-affected areas. The USDA reported that the period from August 2025 to May 2026 was the driest since 1976-77, raising concerns about food supply and rural livelihoods.
