Mayor Mamdani Defends DSA Co-Chair Amid Allegations of Rent Issues

<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has not distanced himself from Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), who faces allegations of failing to pay rent on a Crown Heights apartment while his family reportedly spent $1.4 million renovating their townhouse. Critics have pointed to this situation as contradictory to the anti-landlord, rent-abolitionist agenda that Gordillo supports.</p><p>On Sunday, Mamdani stated that individuals working towards a "more affordable life" for New Yorkers should be welcomed in their efforts. When asked on Monday if Gordillo should resign and whether he condemned the allegations against him, Mamdani reiterated his support for those committed to making New York inclusive, but did not directly address the allegations against Gordillo.</p><p>Gordillo, who has been involved in fundraising and communications efforts with Mamdani, is named in a pending case in Brooklyn Housing Court, where a former landlord claims he owes $5,000 in rent for a $2,500-a-month apartment. This situation has raised questions about his financial practices, especially as his family undertook significant renovations on their townhouse, purchased in 2019 for $935,000.</p><p>Rev. Kevin McCall, a Brooklyn pastor, criticized the DSA for demanding accountability from others while not addressing concerns about Gordillo. He called for public answers from DSA leaders regarding Gordillo's alleged misleading of working-class New Yorkers about his living situation and employment credentials.</p><p>Neither Mamdani's office, the NYC-DSA, nor Gordillo responded to requests for comment. The housing case remains unresolved, and no judgment has been made.</p><p>Concerns about Gordillo's credentials were also highlighted during a press exchange with Mamdani. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers reported that Gordillo was terminated from his electrician apprenticeship due to prolonged absence and failure to participate in required work and classes.</p><p>Furthermore, it was reported that Gordillo received a $95,000 annual salary from the NYC-DSA without disclosing his apprenticeship termination. The renovation of the Bed-Stuy townhouse allegedly involved nonunion contractors and faced a city stop-work order due to permit issues, raising further questions about Gordillo's alignment with union values.</p><p>A source close to the union indicated that Gordillo's work record was not strong, suggesting that he took the job merely for appearances while taking opportunities from others who may have needed them more.</p>
