New Orleans hosted the first stop of Sail 250, a nationwide celebration of America's 250th anniversary, this week. The event featured tall ships and military vessels from around the world docking along the Mississippi River, allowing public access to ships that are typically closed to visitors. Among the vessels was the USCGC Eagle, a 295-foot training ship known as 'America’s Tall Ship,' which has been in service since 1946 and trains future Coast Guard officers in seamanship and leadership skills.
The Eagle, equipped with 23 sails and six miles of rigging, provides a traditional training environment for approximately 150 Coast Guard trainees. Below deck, a printing of the Declaration of Independence serves as a historical reminder of the past.
The event also highlighted modern military life with the presence of the USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship that supports nearly 3,000 sailors and Marines. The Kearsarge is capable of carrying F-35 aircraft and has a Fleet Surgical Team onboard to address medical needs during deployments.
Ceremonial events included a 21-gun salute and ship horns sounding along the river, marking the beginning of the national celebration. The Sail 250 fleet is set to continue its journey up the East Coast with planned stops in Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Boston.
