NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani skips Israel Day parade, emphasizes police presence

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not attend the annual Israel Day parade on Sunday, marking a departure from a long-standing tradition among city leaders. His absence is attributed to his support for Palestinian rights. The parade, which celebrates the establishment of Israel in 1948, has historically seen attendance from mayors and governors. Two weeks prior, Mamdani's office released a video acknowledging the Nakba, which refers to the displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. "I said on the campaign trail that I wouldn’t be attending the parade, and I’ve made my views on the Israeli government abundantly clear," Mamdani stated at a news conference. He assured a significant police presence to ensure the event proceeded smoothly. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch attended the parade, stating, "It is the mayor’s decision not to march, and it is my decision to march proudly." Mamdani's absence has drawn criticism from some Jewish leaders, including Rabbi Marc Schneier, who described it as a “slap in the face to all Jewish New Yorkers.” He also criticized the Nakba video as “propaganda.” Supporters of Israel expressed outrage, stating the video failed to acknowledge the displacement of Jews from Muslim-majority countries and the Holocaust's impact on the establishment of Israel.
