An Arizona school board member, Kimberly Fisher, is facing calls for resignation after she appeared to make a Nazi salute during a public meeting on May 26. Video footage shows Fisher raising her right arm and saying, "Heil, heil" during a dispute with board President Paul Carver Jr. regarding the scheduling of a community study session related to district boundary discussions. Fisher argued that holding the session in the afternoon would hinder community attendance.
Carver later adjourned the meeting, stating that the discussion was veering into an area not on the posted agenda, potentially violating Arizona's Open Meeting Law. He emphasized that it is unacceptable to make such gestures in any context. The Deer Valley Unified School District condemned Fisher's actions, stating that they do not reflect the views of the district and do not condone gestures associated with hate or discrimination.
The Deer Valley Educators Association also called for Fisher's resignation, expressing horror at her conduct. In a Facebook livestream following the meeting, Fisher reiterated her criticism of Carver, describing his leadership as dictatorial and connecting her thoughts to historical dictators, including Hitler. Carver noted that Arizona law limits the ability of school boards to discipline elected members, despite community concerns about Fisher's behavior. The Deer Valley Unified School District serves over 33,000 students in northern Maricopa County.
