Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) stated on June 1, 2026, that the frustration among California voters regarding the aftermath of recent wildfires is understandable, attributing the ongoing recovery challenges to former President Donald Trump. During an appearance on MS NOW’s *the Weekend*, Khanna highlighted the lack of federal support for California, claiming that the state is owed $50 billion and that the Trump administration failed to collaborate effectively with state and local leaders on rebuilding efforts.
Khanna noted that many residents in fire-affected communities are still struggling with the rebuilding process, which has become a significant political issue in California. He acknowledged the anger from residents who have yet to see progress in restoring their homes.
The recovery efforts have also been complicated by disputes involving insurance companies and relief organizations. State Farm, California's largest home insurer, has faced criticism over its handling of wildfire-related claims, while the nonprofit organization FireAid has been scrutinized for the use of funds raised for fire relief. Khanna emphasized that federal actions and funding decisions have significantly impacted recovery efforts and contributed to public dissatisfaction.
