Rep. Dan Goldman of New York has established an immigration triage center in his district office to assist constituents affected by immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. The center provides a space for individuals to meet with immigration attorneys and complete necessary paperwork. Goldman’s office has reported that the center has helped secure the release of 36 individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at 26 Federal Plaza over the past year.
Goldman and his team have been sharing their experiences and strategies with other lawmakers, hosting an event in collaboration with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to educate congressional staffers on best practices for supporting constituents.
Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez, who spoke at the event, highlighted the need for systems and protocols to effectively assist constituents facing deportation. Goldman’s office has developed methods for monitoring immigration cases and advocating for individuals, including filing habeas petitions to challenge federal custody.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that claims of detainee transfers being used strategically are false, asserting that custody determinations are based on bed space and the need for individuals to attend immigration proceedings. Goldman’s office continues to work with federal officials to advocate for their constituents.
