A series of emails has revealed the difficulties faced by British diplomats in acquiring a specific gift for former President Donald Trump. The request, made by former British Ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mandelson, involved a custom red dispatch box similar to those used by UK government officials. Olly Robbins, then the U.K. Foreign Office’s permanent undersecretary, noted that such a gift would be meaningful to Trump, with the box inscribed with 'President of the United States.'
The process to acquire the box proved to be complex, involving communications with the manufacturer approved by the Crown, and attempts to source from different suppliers. Mandelson expressed frustration over the task, likening it to a plot from the British political comedy 'The Thick of It.' An email from civil servant David Tinline confirmed that the box was in production with a presidential seal.
Mandelson was later dismissed from his position following revelations about his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. The status of the dispatch box remains unclear. During a recent visit to the U.S., King Charles III presented Trump with a bell from the submarine HMS Trump. Additionally, documents released regarding Mandelson’s tenure included messages where he described the British government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer as 'beleaguered and bereft.'
