Concerns Raised Over Skid Row Care Campus Amid Reports of Crime and Drug Activity

<p>A homeless services campus in Los Angeles County, referred to as the "Skid Row Care Campus," is facing scrutiny following reports of violence and drug-related activities in the area. The facility, located at 442 S. Crocker Street, was established to provide health care, recovery beds, and other services as part of an effort to address homelessness in Skid Row.</p><p>According to public records, the campus costs approximately $26 million annually to operate and is managed by Homeless Health Care Los Angeles, Social Model Recovery Systems, and Wesley Health Centers. Recent reports indicate a rise in public safety issues, including drug use and violent crime in the vicinity.</p><p>Data from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) shows that officers responded nearly 700 times to the 400 and 500 blocks of Crocker Street in 2026, with four homicides reported in the first four months of the year. Aerial footage has captured instances of open drug use and emergency responders treating overdose patients nearby.</p><p>Estela Lopez, executive director of the Downtown Industrial District Business Improvement District, expressed concerns about the conditions surrounding the facility, stating that they have worsened significantly. Local resident David Fleming echoed these sentiments, describing daily occurrences of drug use and public disturbances.</p><p>Lopez criticized the lack of accountability from government officials regarding the facility's operations and the associated public safety issues. She noted that the volume of police calls should prompt action from city leaders.</p><p>In response to the concerns, Councilmember Ysabel Jurado defended the campus, emphasizing its mission to provide essential services in a neglected neighborhood. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged the issues but highlighted that the facility is operated by the county and that discussions are ongoing to address the concerns.</p><p>The County of Los Angeles has stated its commitment to safety at the campus and has increased security measures in response to community feedback. The campus is part of a broader Skid Row Action Plan aimed at expanding healthcare and support services in the area.</p>
