The national average price for regular gas decreased to $4.29 per gallon on June 2, 2026, a 20-cent drop from the previous week, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). This decline follows a record high of $4.564 per gallon set on May 21, 2026. Gas prices have been declining for 11 days, beginning on Memorial Day weekend, which typically marks the start of the summer driving season.
Compared to a month ago, when the average price was $4.433, current prices are lower. However, prices are still significantly higher than earlier this year, when the average was $2.79 per gallon on January 12, 2026. The increase in prices earlier this year was attributed to winter weather and geopolitical tensions, particularly related to Iran.
Currently, 17 states report gas price averages below $4 per gallon. California has the highest average gas price at $6.012 per gallon, while Indiana has the lowest at $3.623 per gallon. Other states with high prices include Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, and Oregon, while Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Louisiana follow Indiana with lower prices.
