Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., addressed questions regarding controversies surrounding Democrat Graham Platner while reaffirming his support for the Senate candidate. Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, has faced scrutiny over a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery, inflammatory comments made on Reddit, and reports of sexually explicit messages exchanged with women during his marriage.
During a press conference in the Capitol on Tuesday, Schumer was questioned about whether he was satisfied with Platner's explanations regarding the scandals affecting his campaign. Schumer responded, "I met with Graham Platner today, we're going to beat [Sen.] Susan Collins and take back the Senate."
When pressed further about his support for Platner in light of the controversies, Schumer reiterated, "We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate," without directly addressing the questions about the candidate's scandals.
Schumer also attempted to redirect the conversation to other topics, but reporters continued to focus on Platner's situation. After multiple inquiries, he confirmed, "As I said, I endorsed Graham Platner."
Platner's campaign has been marked by various controversies, including a Nazi SS tattoo that he later covered up, vulgar remarks made on a Reddit account, and derogatory comments about different demographics. Additionally, it was reported that Platner has an active account on Kik, an anonymous chatting platform, which has raised concerns due to its association with inappropriate content.
Schumer had previously endorsed Maine Democratic Governor Janet Mills to challenge Collins, but Mills withdrew from the race in April due to insufficient financial support, leaving Platner as the frontrunner in the Democratic primary.
