Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., reaffirmed his support for Senate candidate Graham Platner during a press conference on Tuesday, despite ongoing controversies surrounding Platner. These controversies include a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery, inflammatory comments made on Reddit, and reports of sexually explicit messages sent during his marriage.
When asked about Platner's explanations for these issues, Schumer stated, "I met with Graham Platner today, we're going to beat [Sen.] Susan Collins and take back the Senate." He did not directly address questions regarding whether his support for Platner undermines the Democratic Party's credibility in criticizing similar scandals involving Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
Schumer reiterated his endorsement of Platner multiple times, emphasizing the party's goal to defeat Collins. Platner's campaign has faced scrutiny for various reasons, including a Nazi SS tattoo that he later covered up, vulgar messages on a Reddit account, and derogatory comments about different demographics. Additionally, he has an active account on Kik, an anonymous chatting platform, which has raised concerns due to its association with inappropriate content.
Previously, Schumer endorsed Maine Democratic Governor Janet Mills to challenge Collins, but Mills withdrew from the race in April due to insufficient financial support, leaving Platner as the frontrunner in the Democratic primary.
