A majority of New York voters express concern regarding the rise of socialism and candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), according to a recent poll conducted by the firm co/efficient for the Coalition to Protect Nassau. The survey asked respondents, "How concerned are you about the rise of socialism and candidates from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Party in New York?" Among 1,046 likely voters surveyed, 56% reported being concerned about socialism in New York, with 44% indicating they were "very" concerned, while 44% stated they were not concerned.
The poll revealed that 85% of Republican respondents expressed concern, including 77% who were very worried. In contrast, 62% of Democrats reported they were not concerned about socialism, while 38% indicated they were concerned. Additionally, 58% of voters not registered with a major party expressed worry about socialism, with 44% saying they were very concerned.
In the context of the upcoming governor's race, the poll shows Democratic incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul leading Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman by 48% to 41%, with 11% of respondents undecided. Hochul's lead has increased by one percentage point from a previous poll conducted in July, which showed her leading 47% to 41%.
Two independent polls have also indicated Hochul's lead over Blakeman, with one showing a 9-point lead (Siena University 50% to 41%) and another showing a 19-point lead (Quinnipiac College 58% to 39%). Despite her lead, only 36% of likely voters in the Nassau County Taxpayers poll viewed Hochul favorably, while 46% had an unfavorable view, and 18% were undecided. In comparison, 33% viewed Blakeman favorably, 35% unfavorably, and 33% were unsure or unfamiliar with him.
Voter sentiment regarding the state of New York is largely negative, with 52% indicating it is moving in the wrong direction, 27% believing it is moving in the right direction, and the remainder not expressing an opinion. Key voter concerns include the cost of living, inflation, taxes, and government spending.
In contrast to concerns about socialism, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who represents democratic socialism in New York City, received a higher approval rating than both Hochul and former President Trump. Among statewide voters, 44% approved of Mamdani's job performance, while 43% disapproved, and 13% were undecided. In comparison, only 32% of voters approved of Trump's job performance, while 60% disapproved.
The co/efficient poll conducted for the Nassau Coalition to Protect Taxpayers took place from September 23-25 and included mobile text and cell and landline interviews. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
