An investigation by KFF Health News and The Associated Press has revealed that detainees in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities across at least 33 states are alleging inadequate medical care. Reports include accounts from individuals such as an Albanian man who extracted his own tooth due to pain, a Honduran mother who was hospitalized after being denied blood pressure medication, and a Venezuelan man whose leg became infected due to a lack of medical attention. The investigation indicates that detainees have experienced delays or denials in receiving medications for various health conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes. The number of detainees has increased significantly since President Donald Trump took office, with over 75,000 individuals detained as of January 2026. The investigation analyzed thousands of court cases filed under habeas corpus, revealing widespread claims of medical neglect. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was approached for comment but did not respond prior to publication. DHS officials have previously stated that detainees receive timely medical care, while individual facilities assert compliance with ICE standards. However, detainees have reported serious health issues and inadequate responses to medical requests, raising concerns about the treatment of individuals in ICE custody.
