Democrat Rebecca Bennett will compete against Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. in the general election scheduled for November. Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, secured the Democratic nomination in a primary for a New Jersey House seat, as reported by The Associated Press. Kean has not made a public appearance since early March due to an undisclosed health issue and ran unopposed for the GOP nomination.
Bennett's victory in the primary positions her against Kean, who is facing scrutiny over his prolonged absence from Congress. The Cook Political Report has classified the district as a "toss-up," indicating its significance for both parties. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that Kean has a medical issue and intends to be transparent about it when he returns to work, which he anticipates will be in a few weeks.
Kean has missed all 104 of the most recent roll call votes since March 5, although his office has continued to communicate via social media. He previously indicated that he would resume work shortly. Bennett's campaign was less progressive compared to her Democratic opponents, and she did not advocate for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Bennett following her primary win, labeling her as a "tax-and-spend liberal."
