Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-NJ) has secured renomination as the Republican candidate for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District following the primaries held on Tuesday. Kean was unopposed in the GOP primary and will compete against Democratic nominee Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy pilot, in the general election. The Associated Press reported that with 48% of ballots counted, Bennett received 47.7% of the vote, leading over second-place candidate Tina Shah, who garnered 20.2%.
Kean, who has not been publicly active due to an unspecified medical issue, stated he is "more energized than ever" and plans to return to in-person work soon. He has missed over 100 votes in the House since March 5. House GOP leadership has expressed concern over his ability to maintain his seat, as Kean seeks a third term in a competitive district crucial for the GOP's House majority.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) mentioned that leadership is expecting Kean back soon and anticipates he will be transparent about his health. Although Kean has confirmed his intention to run, his absence may become a focal point in the upcoming election. Under New Jersey election law, there is a provision for Kean to withdraw post-primary if necessary.
Former President Donald Trump endorsed Kean, highlighting his commitment to various Republican priorities. Bennett has criticized Kean's voting record, claiming he has failed the district. Democrats view Kean's seat as a significant target for the November elections, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee listing it as a prime pickup opportunity.
