A recent analysis has identified a small number of individuals responsible for maintaining crucial code that supports billions of devices worldwide. The study focused on 23 software projects essential for the operation of phones, browsers, and servers, counting contributors who made ten or more changes from October 2025 to October 2026. Notable contributors include Paul Eggert, who has coordinated the time zone file since 2012, and has made 218 of the 251 changes in the past year. The time zone file is utilized by both Android and iOS devices, with significant updates including a change for Manitoba to remain on permanent -05 time starting 31 October.
The analysis also highlighted the contributions of other key figures such as Lasse Collin, who maintains the xz compression tool, and Denis Pushkarev, who has sought funding for the core-js project, which is widely used in web development. Additionally, Todd Miller has been responsible for the sudo command, while D. Richard Hipp created SQLite, a database format used extensively across platforms. The study noted that many of these contributors work without financial compensation, relying on donations or sponsorships to support their projects.
The findings underscore the reliance on a small group of individuals for the maintenance of software that underpins modern digital infrastructure, raising questions about the sustainability of these unpaid projects. The data for this analysis was gathered from public project histories and contributions.
