Rep. Josh Turek won Iowa's Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, defeating state Sen. Zach Wahls. The Associated Press reported Turek's victory at 9:42 p.m. Eastern time, with Turek receiving 63.1% of the vote compared to Wahls's 36.9% with 38% of ballots counted.
Turek entered Election Day with support from prominent Iowa Democrats and significant financial backing from Democratic-aligned groups. Polling averages indicated Turek had a substantial lead in the final weeks of the campaign, shifting from a competitive primary to one where he was favored.
The primary attracted national attention, highlighting tensions within the Democratic Party regarding leadership and candidate positioning. Wahls criticized Turek's ties to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and positioned himself as a populist candidate.
Although neither Schumer nor the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee endorsed Turek, outside groups, including VoteVets, invested heavily in his campaign. Turek, a former Paralympian, framed himself as the candidate best suited to challenge Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson in the general election.
Hinson secured the Republican nomination after gaining support following Sen. Joni Ernst's retirement announcement. The general election is expected to be competitive, with both parties reserving significant advertising funds in Iowa.
