Deb Haaland, the former Interior Secretary under President Biden, won the Democratic nomination for governor of New Mexico on Tuesday. She secured the nomination over Sam Bregman, the district attorney of Bernalillo County, with 78.3% of the vote compared to Bregman's 21.7%, according to the Associated Press, which called the race with 17% of the votes counted.
Incumbent Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who was first elected in 2018, is term-limited and cannot seek a second term. Lujan Grisham did not endorse any candidate in the primary contest.
Haaland was considered the front-runner throughout the campaign, having raised more funds than Bregman and receiving endorsements from Senator Ben Ray Lujan and former Senator Tom Udall. She was also supported by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Haaland served as Interior Secretary for the entirety of Biden's term and was previously a member of the House of Representatives for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District.
