Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) is campaigning for Democrat Roy Cooper in the North Carolina Senate race this week as part of the 2026 midterm elections.

Spanberger stated on X, "Our neighbors to the south are ready to send @RoyCooperNC to the U.S. Senate and elect Democrats across the state."

Throughout the midterm election season, Spanberger has supported several candidates, primarily from Virginia, but has recently expanded her efforts to North Carolina. She shared images on social media from a campaign event with the North Carolina Democratic Party on Thursday.

Spanberger encouraged voters in North Carolina to make their voices heard, saying, "You can stand up to the chaos coming out of Washington. You can demand more. Make your voice heard. Get out and VOTE."

Cooper, the former Democratic governor of North Carolina, is competing against Republican Michael Whatley to succeed retiring Sen. Thom Tillis (D-NC). The Cook Political Report recently adjusted its forecast for the race, moving it from "lean Democratic" to "likely Democratic" in favor of Cooper.

The Virginia governor, who won her 2025 election by a double-digit margin, has campaigned across Virginia with Democratic House candidates such as Beth Macy, who is challenging incumbent Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA); Tom Perriello, who is contesting incumbent Rep. John McGuire (R-VA); and Shannon Taylor, who is running against Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA). Each candidate is following the Democrats’ 2026 affordability strategy, which Spanberger successfully utilized in her election last November.

In addition to her efforts in Virginia, Spanberger has also supported Democrat Cait Conley, who is challenging Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and has received backing from prominent national Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
