J.J. McCarthy, the backup quarterback for the Giants, has received positive feedback regarding his progress in learning the team's playbook since being acquired from the Vikings. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy stated, "I would say it’s an A-plus," noting that McCarthy has advanced significantly in just a week. Nagy credited the position coaches for their dedication to both McCarthy and fellow quarterback Jake Haener, emphasizing the importance of both players understanding the entire game plan.
The Giants had a specialized package of plays ready for McCarthy in the last game, but it was not utilized. Nagy mentioned that they were working to identify McCarthy's strengths while also ensuring he and Haener were prepared for the full game strategy.
In terms of player updates, wide receiver Malik Nabers and left tackle Andrew Thomas were upgraded to limited participants in practice, while defensive tackle Chauncey Golston and safety Jason Pinnock remained out. Tight ends Isaiah Likely and Chris Manhertz, along with running back Cam Skattebo, were also limited in practice, although Skattebo no longer wore a non-contact jersey. Running back Najee Harris returned to practice after missing a session for personal reasons.
Following the season-ending injury to Braxton Berrios, Charlie Jones has been named the new kickoff and punt returner. Special teams coordinator Chris Horton praised Jones for his confidence and decision-making skills.
Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson noted that the Giants increased their blitzing in Week 4 compared to Week 3, which contributed to their defensive performance, as players felt comfortable in coverage and were able to pressure the opposing quarterback effectively.
