LEVITTOWN, Pennsylvania — Jim, a 58-year-old man at Sparky’s, offers a menthol cigarette, marking a rare indoor smoking experience in a bar after 15 years. Sparky’s World Famous Bar allows smoking as it does not serve food.

Food is available at Sparky’s, but patrons cannot purchase it. A popcorn machine provides snacks, and leftover pumpkin pie from a local motorcycle club's anniversary celebration sits on the high-tops.

The visit to Levittown aims to examine a significant battleground for the 2026 elections and potentially the 2028 elections.

Two vulnerable Republicans, Ryan Mackenzie and Rob Bresnahan, are located north of here along the New Jersey border. Political analysts should monitor Bucks County, where incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick may face challenges if Democratic support increases.

This area presents Democrats with three opportunities to gain seats in state Senate races, potentially leading to a majority.

If Democrats secure the U.S. House and establish a governing trifecta in Pennsylvania, the eastern region may play a crucial role. This situation raises concerns for Republicans regarding the future of their party after Trump's presidency.

The political realignment over the past 30 years, accelerated by President Donald Trump, may create a structural advantage for Democrats in upcoming elections.

Bucks County, located just north of Philadelphia, has a blue-collar demographic. Historically, residents of Levittown worked in industrial jobs in Northeast Philadelphia or at the U.S. Steel mill in Fairless Hills.

Trump won Bucks County in 2024 by gaining support from Lower Bucks voters.

In the 2012 presidential election, Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney by 20 points in Levittown. Trump reduced that loss to 10 points in 2016 and 2020, ultimately tying then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 with 48.5%. This represents a nearly 20-point shift towards Republicans in this working-class area.

However, this shift in Lower Bucks was counterbalanced by a swing towards Democrats in Middle Bucks.

Newtown, Pennsylvania, contrasts with Bristol, where Sparky’s is located. Newtown's clientele enjoys upscale dining experiences, while Bristol has a more casual atmosphere. The median home value in Newtown is significantly higher than in Bristol.

Romney narrowly won Newtown in 2012, but Harris defeated Trump in 2024 by over 1,800 votes.

Bucks County exemplifies a national trend where working-class voters are shifting towards the Republican Party, while upper-middle-class suburban voters are moving towards the Democratic Party.

Trump's influence has intensified this shift. Jim, a local patron, expresses a belief in Trump's intentions despite acknowledging his flaws, stating, "I think he actually wants to make the country better." Jim recalls his father's view of Democrats as the party of the working class, a perspective he feels has changed.

Jim, who previously did not engage in voting, has participated in elections since Trump's candidacy.

Conversely, Jody, a college-educated resident of Newtown, observes the political shift, noting that Levittown is becoming more Republican while affluent areas are leaning Democratic.

Rob, a liberal from Newtown, describes the Democratic Party's transformation, expressing confusion about its current direction and attributing its changes to financial influences from Wall Street.

This demographic shift — Newtown becoming more Democratic while Levittown trends Republican — has benefited Republicans in recent elections. However, it poses long-term challenges.

Jim is unaware of upcoming elections or candidates, highlighting a disconnect among low-frequency voters. The drop in voter turnout is notable: Newtown's congressional votes decreased by 11% from 2016 to 2018, while Levittown's dropped by 17%, with Bristol Township experiencing a 21% decline.

This decline in turnout may jeopardize Fitzpatrick's re-election, as voters like Jim may not participate.

The Republican Party faces challenges beyond midterm elections. Many low-frequency voters, such as Jim, do not align with traditional Republican values and may not continue voting in future elections.
