Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) advanced to the general election for California's 22nd Congressional District after receiving 44.5% of the votes, totaling 17,763 votes, with approximately 54% of the ballots counted as of early Wednesday morning. Two Democrats, Randy Villegas and Jasmeet Bains, are competing for the second spot to join Valadao in the general election, with Villegas at 29.8% (11,894 votes) and Bains at 25.6% (10,222 votes).
The top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will proceed to the general election. This race is noted as one of the most competitive in the country. Valadao, who has served in Congress since 2012, has faced challenges due to a redrawn district and has previously been a target for Democratic candidates. He has emphasized his support for immigration reform and has been involved in contentious political battles, including his stance during the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
Valadao criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for the redistricting process, calling it 'despicable.' He stated that Newsom has focused on political conflicts rather than governance. Both Bains and Villegas are children of immigrants, with Bains being a physician and the first South Asian woman elected to the California legislature, while Villegas has garnered support from progressive leaders, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Villegas has pledged not to accept corporate campaign contributions and has gained endorsements from local Democratic Party chairs, highlighting his grassroots campaign efforts.
