A Gallup poll released on June 3, 2026, indicates that support for LGBTQ+ issues among Americans has plateaued and begun to decline. The survey shows that 65% of Americans support legal same-sex marriage, a decrease of six percentage points from its peak in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, moral acceptance of gay and lesbian relationships has fallen to 62%, the lowest level since 2016. Public acceptance of gender transition has also declined, with only 38% of Americans considering it morally acceptable, down eight points since 2021, while 57% view it as morally wrong.
The decline in support is primarily attributed to shifts in Republican and independent voters' attitudes, while Democratic views on LGBTQ+ issues have remained stable. Support for same-sex marriage among Republicans has dropped to 37%, down from 55% in 2021-2022. Independents' support has decreased by six points to 67%, while Democrats' support remains at 87%. Similarly, acceptance of the morality of same-sex relationships among Republicans has decreased by 21 points to 35%, while independents' acceptance fell to 64%.
On the issue of gender transition, only 5% of Republicans view it as morally acceptable, compared to 42% of independents and 60% of Democrats. The survey results were collected during Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey conducted in early May. Despite a general increase in support for gay marriage over the past two decades, the data indicates a marginal decline in support since 2024, with moral approval of gay and lesbian relations dropping from 71% in 2022 to 64% in 2023.
