The FBI is investigating Rich Schaffer, the Chairman of the Suffolk County Democratic Party, following claims that he attempted to buy votes to secure his reelection. Sources indicate that Schaffer was reelected last month despite facing accusations of attempting to pressure party members and offering money in exchange for votes to maintain his position after 26 years.
While the FBI has not commented on the investigation, several party members and local officials reported being contacted by federal agents regarding Schaffer. Allegations from multiple Democrats and former allies suggest a campaign involving coercive tactics, including alleged backdoor agreements with the local Republican Party to prevent Democratic candidates from appearing on the county ballot.
Accusations also include threats to committee members regarding their employment in party-controlled positions and cash offers to those who would support Schaffer over his progressive opponent, Kathryn Casey Quigley. Text messages reviewed indicate that Schaffer offered payments to at least three committee members for their votes. One message reportedly asked if a member could be paid to miss work to vote for him.
An audio recording from a meeting at party headquarters allegedly features an ally of Schaffer pressuring committee members to support him or risk losing their jobs. Leigh-Ann Barde, Islip Town Democratic Chairwoman and a former supporter of Schaffer, has publicly criticized him after he allegedly threatened her husband, who is a committee member.
Schaffer has denied the allegations, calling them baseless, and stated that he had not been contacted by law enforcement as of Wednesday. His attorney, Mark Lesko, defended Schaffer, asserting that he exemplifies professionalism and ethics in Long Island politics. The New York State Attorney General’s office has confirmed that it is reviewing whistleblower complaints against Schaffer.
