A group of lawmakers has requested information from the White House regarding a $620 million loan from the Pentagon to Vulcan Elements, a startup associated with Donald Trump Jr. This request follows a ProPublica investigation that indicated a senior aide to the president intervened to secure the loan. The lawmakers, including Senators Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, and Mazie Hirono, expressed concerns about potential corruption and influence peddling that could undermine national security and taxpayer interests.
The loan to Vulcan Elements was announced by the Pentagon last year, shortly after Trump Jr.'s venture capital firm acquired a stake in the company. The request for the loan was reportedly made by Peter Navarro, a senior counselor to the president, who is a friend of Trump Jr. According to sources, Vulcan's loan was the only one initiated by a top aide to the president among the many companies considered for funding at that time.
The lawmakers have posed several questions to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles regarding Navarro's involvement and whether the president was aware of the loan request. They emphasized the expectation that the Department of Defense's contracting process should be fair and unbiased.
Navarro has dismissed the allegations as exaggerated and labeled the reporting as 'fake news.' The White House has not provided immediate comments, while a Pentagon spokesperson stated that no company receives preferential treatment in funding decisions. The loan is part of the Pentagon's strategy to decrease reliance on China's critical mineral supply chains, significantly increasing Vulcan's valuation after the announcement. This incident marks a notable instance of a federal contract being directly linked to White House intervention, with other lawmakers also calling for investigations into the matter.
