U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated on June 3, 2026, that the primary border wall, extending from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to be completed by June 2027. He indicated that all contracts for the project will be finalized by the end of the month, emphasizing that the department is making significant progress.
Mullin made these remarks during his testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee regarding the department's budget for the 2027 fiscal year. He had also testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee the previous day.
Mullin clarified that the primary wall is distinct from a secondary wall. He explained that the primary wall is necessary due to adjustments made by criminal organizations, stating, "The primary wall is the first wall up because of the way the cartels adjust... they're thugs and they're terrorists." He noted that the secondary wall, which will be 150 feet tall in certain areas, is intended to address breaches in the primary wall.
He added that the implementation of a smart wall technology will enhance monitoring capabilities, allowing for aerial surveillance using drones. Mullin expressed confidence in the progress being made, projecting that the secondary wall could be completed by summer 2028. He also mentioned his efforts to address concerns raised by Democratic members of Congress regarding the project.
