Byron York, chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner, expressed concerns regarding Bill Pulte's qualifications for the role of acting director of national intelligence. York stated, "It seems like a pretty poor choice here," during an appearance on Fox News's Special Report.

President Donald Trump appointed Pulte to the position following the resignation of Tulsi Gabbard, who stepped down due to her husband's cancer diagnosis. Pulte currently serves as the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but has faced criticism for lacking international security experience.

York referenced comments from Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), who also questioned Pulte's qualifications. York stated, "I don’t either. I’m not sure exactly what explains it." Additionally, York criticized Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz for his vague response regarding Pulte's appointment. Oz remarked, "I think Bill is a great guy... I do trust the president’s judgment."

York noted that Pulte would require Senate confirmation if nominated permanently, as he currently holds the position in an acting capacity.
