Republicans are criticizing Adam Hamawy, the Democratic nominee for New Jersey's 12th District, due to his past association with Omar Abdel-Rahman, a militant Islamist known as the "Blind Sheikh." Hamawy won his primary election on June 4, 2026, and is expected to win in the general election. Abdel-Rahman was the founder of al Jama’a al Islamiyya and was convicted for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Hamawy testified for the defense during Abdel-Rahman’s trial, discussing their association, which included attending a conference in 1991. Republican Representative Mike Lawler has called for an investigation into Hamawy's ties, expressing concerns about his suitability for Congress. A spokesperson for Hamawy stated that he condemns violence and had no contact with Abdel-Rahman after his arrest.
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kristen Cianci stated that Hamawy's past disqualifies him from public office. Hamawy has received support from prominent Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
