James "Weston" Higginbotham, a 20-year-old Auburn University student, has been missing in Japan since May 29. His parents, Nancy and Keith Higginbotham, stated that he set off alone during a family vacation after experiencing some family disagreements. They shared details about the situation during an interview on a news program. Nancy Higginbotham mentioned that the family had decided to separate temporarily and that Weston, who is described as well-traveled and a good navigator, went to explore on his own.
The family was using the Life360 app to track his location, which showed him near a river and visiting stores before he boarded a train. After that, his location became unavailable. Nancy Higginbotham noted that her son may have needed some time alone but emphasized that he is capable of handling himself in the wilderness.
Weston is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, with long blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a shirt with "Save the Bees" printed on it, lavender corduroy pants, and white Adidas sneakers. The family has been actively sharing updates on social media regarding the search efforts, which include police, K-9 units, and helicopters combing the area around Yamashina, known for its hiking trails and temples. The parents expressed gratitude towards the Japanese police, the U.S. Embassy, and the FBI for their assistance in the search, and they remain hopeful for his safe return.
