Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) identified Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Representative James Talarico (D-TX), and former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper as three Democrats he views as leaders in the party. During an interview with Jake Tapper on State of the Union, Booker expressed that the Democratic Party needs new leadership and has experienced frustrations with the party. He emphasized the importance of trust between the party and the public, stating, "You cannot lead the people if they don’t trust you."
Talarico and Cooper are running as Democratic Senate candidates in Texas and North Carolina, respectively. Talarico may face either Trump-backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton or incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), while Cooper will contend with Michael Whatley, a former Republican National Committee chairman.
When asked about his confidence in Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Booker did not provide a direct response. Additionally, Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin faced criticism after the DNC released a report on the 2024 election that many stakeholders felt was incomplete. Booker had previously called for the release of this autopsy report. He also remarked that winning elections requires more than just opposing President Donald Trump, advocating for the promotion of new ideas.
