A 29-year-old man, Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi, has been charged with assaulting five women on the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus within an hour last week. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Akindahunsi allegedly sexually assaulted two women and attempted to assault a third, while also physically assaulting two other women. Four of the victims are students at the university.
Akindahunsi faces several charges, including one felony count of attempted kidnapping to commit forcible rape, three felony counts of assault with intent to commit forcible rape during a first-degree burglary, and two felony counts of assault likely to produce great bodily injury.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that these incidents raise concerns about campus safety and emphasized the commitment to bringing the alleged attacker to justice. The series of assaults reportedly began at 11:30 p.m. on May 28, when Akindahunsi attacked a woman on Bruin Walk and fled with her phone. He then followed two women into their dorm building, where he allegedly assaulted one and physically attacked the other.
Akindahunsi is accused of attempting to kidnap another woman in a different dorm building, but she managed to escape. He later sexually assaulted a woman in the hallway of her dorm before fleeing the scene. He was arrested shortly after by campus police, who were alerted by witnesses. Akindahunsi was found in possession of zip ties, duct tape, and paracord. He is currently being held in the Los Angeles County Jail without bail, and his citizenship status has not been confirmed.
