The Senate has passed a budget reconciliation package that allocates approximately $70 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol funding over the next three and a half years. This decision follows a lengthy debate that highlighted divisions among Senate Republicans regarding President Donald Trump's immigration agenda. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated that Democrats had not agreed to any funding without significant reforms, which led to the current situation.
The passage of the package comes after various contentious issues, including a proposed $1 billion funding for security upgrades to Trump's properties, which was ultimately removed. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding a nearly $2 billion fund aimed at individuals who felt targeted by the government, particularly in relation to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, expressed skepticism about Trump's ability to manage the funds responsibly. Despite attempts by some Republicans to amend the package and eliminate certain funds, these efforts were unsuccessful. The package is now set to move to the House, where it is anticipated to pass by the end of the week.
