President Donald Trump is advocating for Congress to make daylight saving time permanent, aiming to eliminate the biannual clock changes observed in most U.S. states. According to Politico, Trump has urged Republican lawmakers to support this initiative, citing benefits for voters who adjust their clocks twice a year. Currently, most of the U.S. observes daylight saving time, with exceptions for Hawaii and most of Arizona. A senior White House official stated that this issue is a significant priority for the president.
Recently, the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 48–1 in favor of the Sunshine Protection Act, which seeks to maintain daylight saving time year-round. Trump expressed his support on Truth Social, stating that it would reduce the hassle of changing clocks and be a positive outcome for the Republican Party.
While Trump has faced challenges in other areas, such as negotiations related to the Iran war, he appears to be focused on securing legislative wins, no matter how small. The bill must still pass the full House and the Senate, where Trump is reportedly making direct calls to garner support. Some Republican senators, like Tom Cotton, have expressed concerns about the implications of permanent daylight saving time, including potential safety issues for children traveling to school in the dark. Bipartisan efforts to make this change permanent have previously stalled due to differing opinions on the impact of darker mornings versus longer evenings.
