Two MLB players were injured during a divisional game on Thursday night following a collision at first base. Arizona Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas and Los Angeles Dodgers' Max Muncy collided while attempting to reach first base during the fifth inning. Muncy hit a ball up the line, and Vargas charged toward first base as pitcher Ryne Nelson was not in position to cover the bag. Both players fell to the ground after the collision.
Muncy was the first to get up and walked to the dugout, while Vargas required assistance to stand and also walked to his dugout. Muncy experienced shortness of breath but was evaluated and did not have a concussion. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Muncy would not play on Friday against the Angels but could be available for the weekend.
Vargas sustained bruises on his left side, including his thigh, ribs, and neck. X-rays were negative, and he expressed to manager Torey Lovullo that he would be ready to play if needed on Friday. Muncy commented on the incident, expressing concern for Vargas and describing the situation as unfortunate. Vargas described feeling as if he had collided with a truck. The game concluded with the Diamondbacks winning 3-2, splitting the four-game series.
