In the gubernatorial race, Republican Steve Hilton leads with 1,533,435 votes, followed by former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra with 1,470,100 votes, and billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer with 1,139,517 votes. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes in either race, the top two candidates will proceed to a runoff in November.
California's polls closed on June 2, but final results may take weeks to be certified. A bipartisan bill passed in 2025 mandates that "non-problematic" votes be counted within 13 days. The state has a high rate of mail-in voting, with 81% of voters using this method in 2024, compared to the national average of 43%.
