Website traffic generated by AI agents and bots has surpassed that of human users for the first time, as reported by Cloudflare. The company indicated that 57.4% of web requests are now initiated by bots, while 42.6% come from humans. Cloudflare's co-founder and CEO, Matthew Prince, noted that this milestone was reached sooner than anticipated, with initial predictions estimating it would occur by the end of 2027. He highlighted the rapid growth of autonomous AI programs that operate with minimal human input.
In an interview, Prince expressed surprise at the pace of this increase in nonhuman traffic, which he believes could have significant implications for the internet's future. He referenced a Pew Research Center report indicating that 38% of webpages from 2013 are no longer accessible, suggesting a contraction of the web over the past decade. However, he noted a recent exponential growth in web activity driven by AI.
The rise of bot traffic has sparked discussions about the future of the internet's business model, as bots do not engage with advertisements. Prince suggested that one potential solution could involve charging bots for access to content, which might create a more favorable environment for human users. He described this as a possible 'golden age of the internet.'
