Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, did not dismiss the possibility of running for president in 2028 but emphasized that expanding healthcare is a higher priority than seeking higher office. In a statement, she said, "Could I be president? Could I not be president? Maybe, maybe not." Ocasio-Cortez redirected the conversation from her political aspirations to the importance of policy achievements, asserting that the success of holding office is measured by what can be accomplished. She stated, "What matters more is that we guarantee healthcare in this country."
Speculation regarding her potential candidacy has increased, with some Democrats considering her a possible contender for the 2028 presidential race. Although she has not formally announced a campaign, she has not ruled it out either. Ocasio-Cortez mentioned that her ambitions extend beyond specific offices, focusing instead on broader policy goals such as universal healthcare.
She noted, "There’s a world where in order to do that, I shouldn’t have that job. There’s a world where, maybe. But the most important thing is getting everyone healthcare in this country." Ocasio-Cortez has previously addressed questions about a potential White House bid, stating that her ambition is to effect change rather than simply hold a title.
Her comments come amid discussions about the 2028 presidential field, which includes other Democrats like California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
