Jonathan Bush, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Maine, is seeking endorsement from former President Donald Trump ahead of the June 9 primary. Bush previously operated a network of birthing clinics in San Diego County that primarily served migrant women, according to a review by Fox News Digital. In his 2014 book, Bush stated that his practice was the largest obstetric practice in San Diego County, relying heavily on Medi-Cal and attracting migrant workers through Spanish-language advertisements.
Bush reported that at its peak, the clinics facilitated approximately 3,000 births annually. He mentioned that the clientele included many low-income families, some of whom paid out-of-pocket. However, the Bush campaign has countered claims regarding the clinics' services, asserting that Athenahealth, the company associated with Bush, did not provide birthing services and functioned as a healthcare software company.
Bush's past comments have raised questions about his role in providing services to women who may not have been U.S. citizens and whether this could impact his gubernatorial campaign. His opponent, Bobby Charles, criticized Bush's history, suggesting it contradicts his current pro-American messaging. The primary election in Maine is set for June 9.
