The Israeli Air Force conducted strikes on military targets in central and western Iran on Monday morning local time, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces. This action follows an Iranian missile attack against Israel and represents a new phase in escalating tensions that began on Sunday. This marks the first instance of Israeli strikes on Iran since the ceasefire established on April 8.
Iran had previously threatened to expand its attacks and target U.S. bases in the region if Israel retaliated. U.S. officials indicated that further exchanges of fire could jeopardize negotiations between the U.S. and Iran and potentially lead to a resumption of conflict.
President Trump advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from retaliating just hours before the strikes occurred. A U.S. official described the Israeli strikes as "relatively limited" in scope. Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Karaj, Isfahan, Tabriz, and Kermanshah, as per Iranian state media. Following the strikes, Iran closed its airspace around Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport.
