Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) is providing financial support to the campaign operations of black lawmakers affected by Republican-led redistricting efforts, particularly in Southern states. According to MS Now, Booker is spending at least six figures on black Democratic candidates, Southern state Democratic parties, and related organizations, although the exact amount is not specified.
Booker stated that his efforts aim to defend black representation, which he believes is threatened by these redistricting initiatives. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming midterm elections in maintaining this representation and pledged resources to support candidates and organizations involved in this effort.
The funding will be directed towards Democratic incumbents impacted by redistricting, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and seven state Democratic parties in Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, Missouri, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Most of these states are either implementing or pursuing new congressional maps that may favor Republican candidates.
The South Carolina legislature recently blocked a redistricting bill that would have targeted Representative Jim Clyburn (D-SC), a prominent black congressman seeking reelection. If successful, Republicans could gain up to 10 House seats nationwide in the midterm elections.
The redistricting efforts have been supported by the Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which deemed racial gerrymandering unlawful and weakened protections in the Voting Rights Act. Booker and other Democrats have criticized this ruling, expressing concerns over the potential elimination of black representation in Southern states.
