President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States will 'respond' following the downing of an Apache helicopter by Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. The two pilots involved were reported safe and uninjured, according to Trump’s post on Truth Social. He did not specify the nature of the U.S. response but indicated that conflict with Iran may escalate, despite earlier claims of a potential deal to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The incident occurred on Monday evening near the coast of Oman, as reported by U.S. Central Command (Centcom), which is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the helicopter's downing. The two soldiers were rescued by U.S. Naval Forces and the 82nd Airborne Division within two hours.
Iran has not officially claimed responsibility for the incident, but Iranian officials commented on the situation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested that foreign forces near Iranian territory are at risk due to their own errors or potential crossfire. He emphasized a preference for diplomacy while also indicating readiness for other forms of communication if necessary.
Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, echoed this sentiment, warning against breaking commitments. Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Trump's statements.
