Republican Senator Thom Tillis criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's management of the ongoing conflict in Iran during an appearance on CNN's State of the Union. Tillis remarked that Hegseth's performance makes South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem appear competent by comparison. He expressed concerns about a reported peace deal, which he claims represents a shift in the Trump administration's approach to the war.
Tillis noted that Hegseth previously stated that the U.S. had 'obliterated' Iran's defenses, yet the current discussions suggest a potential acceptance of Iran retaining nuclear material. He questioned the logic behind this change in stance.
The proposed deal, which includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, has not yet been finalized as Iran has not agreed to relinquish its uranium. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passageway for approximately 20% of the world's oil supply, and its closure has contributed to rising gas prices, which have exceeded $4.50 per gallon according to AAA.
Tillis has been a vocal critic of both Hegseth and Noem, previously calling for Noem to resign from her position as Homeland Security Secretary due to her decisions regarding immigration enforcement. He is set to retire from the Senate at the end of his current term in January.
