South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson will participate in a runoff election for the Republican nomination for governor after securing the top two positions in the primary. Evette received approximately 29.1% of the vote, while Wilson garnered 26.5%, according to the Associated Press as of Tuesday evening. Other candidates included Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, who received 16.5% and 11.4% respectively, and businessman Rom Reddy, who received 14.9%.
Evette's campaign has been aligned with the agenda of former President Donald Trump, who endorsed her in May. Wilson has focused on issues such as law and order and economic affordability. Both candidates have expressed intentions to eliminate the state's income tax. The runoff election is scheduled for June 23, with the winner set to compete in the general election against Democratic state Representative Jermaine Johnson, who won the Democratic primary with approximately 58.4% of the vote.
